As 7.1%, Michigan currently ties with Mississippi as the state with the highest unemployment rating in the nation.
And we never had a hurricane to contend with!
Today I volunteered for the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee, at a luncheon honoring Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. Eleanor's Legacy is an organization dedicated to electing female Democratic candidates to public office in New York. Along with Senator Clinton, there were a number of women who are currently running for office in New York State, including Kirsten Gillibrand and Yvette Clarke.
The ballroom of the Grand Hyatt was filled with over 800 people, mostly older society women carrying Birkin bags and who gave each other air kisses. My job was to help them find their seats and set up gift bags in the VIP lounge. Both jobs required fairly minimal work and it was definitely worth it to see Senator Clinton speak (especially since the cheapest tickets for the luncheon itself were $175.)
Looking just like she did on TV, she lit up the crowd. Much of her speech focused on how Democrats ask Republicans why they vote the way they do. She then went on to say that Republicans didn't want the casualties of the war in Iraq, they didn't want womens' health to be compromised, they didn't want religion put before science. I wish I could've had the chance to shake her hand, but sadly it was too busy after her speech for me to get anywhere near here. Hopefully I will get the chance to talk to her the next time I hear her speak.
