Thanks to my friend Erin for giving me this heads up.
Harvard may allow gender neutral ("co-ed") rooms - which sure does piss Fox Boston off.
Full of so many gender clichés, I don't even know where to begin. I could barely get through the whole thing due to my desire to punch the satellite anchor in the face, but here are a few of the highlights:
- "Some male students have said some of their best friends are female... they keep the same hours, go to the same classes, sleep at the same time. Are they going to share that time of the month too?"
- "I believe Ted Kennedy went to Harvard. What more do you need to know?"
- "She's smart. How good can she look?"
- "It's like it's a huge orgy at Harvard!"
Let's get to the real point. I'm SO SICK of people perpetuating gender differences. You know what? Most women I know do not act a thing like the stereotyped image that Fox Boston puts out. In fact, many women I know don't mind farting or burping in front of men and even (gasp!) enjoy watching football.
Men and women have differences, yes. But these differences are simply not as wide and distinct as the mainstream media wants us to believe.
And lastly, I don't know anything about the Harvard policy. However, I'm wondering if maybe one of the reasons that Harvard students are spearheading this is to make it easier for transgendered students to assimilate. Part of overcoming transphobia is providing alternatives for folks who don't fit 100% into black & white binary gender.
